Max Richter Piano
The centrepiece of the main live room at Max Richter’s spectacular countryside studio, Studio Richter Mahr, is the coveted Steinway Model D Spirio | r grand piano. Used by Max to compose, rehearse and perform his latest works, this special instrument and its delicate nature underpins his sound and ethos, completely.
Recorded in great detail with a range of modern and vintage mics, and focusing on the softer dynamics, this is an accurately sampled, precision virtual instrument, capable of performing the level of detail required to access the level of emotion and atmosphere typical in Max’s work.

Dark Mode
An alternative piano colour, recessed and unobtrusive. Based on the original open piano recordings of Max Richter’s Steinway Concert Grand, and processed via a curated chain of filters and EQs, the result is an already soft piano taken to the extreme - full of warmth and character, yet with very little brightness; it’s a transparent sound designed to sit underneath.

“We decided to launch SRM Sounds because, even though there are a million sample libraries out there, I could find hardly any that really hit the spot for me.
For composers, sound is an incredibly personal and emotional thing. For many of us, the experience of falling in love with the physical and tactile aspects of sound is what got us into music in the first place, so working with sounds that aren’t quite right is really disturbing. Therefore, we decided to make our own Kontakt instrument collection, using the wonderful acoustics and technical resources of Studio Richter Mahr. These instruments have the colours that I love to use to tell the stories I want to tell.”
